What are my special features?
Manx Loaghtan sheep are a hardy, fine looking, primitive breed with long legs and 4-6 magnificent horns.
Manx Loagthan sheep graze on the natural herbage of the island and take 15-18 months to reach maturity. This results in a dark, lean meat which has a slightly gamey flavour.
What is my history?
The Manx Loaghtan is native to the Isle of Man and a descendent of the prehistoric short-tailed breeds found in isolated parts of North West Europe. The sheep have been grazing on the Isle of Man for many years and are highly prized within the specialist wool and meat market.
Why am I forgotten?
Competition with other hill sheep breeds caused numbers to decline. Although a few enthusiasts have saved the breed from extinction, numbers still remain low.
