What are my special features?
The Large Black has lop ears and a long, black coloured deep body. It is docile and due to its skin colouring the breed thrives outside. The quality of the meat is excellent with a rich gamey flavour. The Large Black pig is Britain’s only all black pig.
What is my history?
The Large Black Pig has origins in Devon and Cornwall. The breed is derived from the Old English Hog, established in the 16th and 17th centuries. By the late 1880’s there were two distinct types of Large Black, one to be found in East Anglia and the other in Devon and Cornwall.
In the early part of the 20th century, Large Black Pigs were widely distributed throughout the country and were frequently crossed with Large and Middle Whites. The Large Black was also very successful in the show ring.
Why am I forgotten?
Today the numbers have greatly reduced due to the desire for a leaner carcass and the general turn away from coloured pigs.
Don’t lose me… cook me!
