How Liz and Steve got into rearing British Lop and why they chose this particular breed:
Situated in an idylic setting on the edge of Chesham, Liz and Steve Bateman run Hazeldene farm as well as a shop where they sell their high quality rare breed meat and some other local produce. Passionate about rearing rare breed animals in the traditional way, they know that caring for their animals produces better quality meat. They happily welcome visitors to look around the farm and see the quality of lives their animals have. While looking for a rare pig type to breed and sell the meat in their farm shop, Liz and Steve came across the British Lop pig and knew it was exactly what they were looking for. It is one of the rarest of British native breeds and is very easy and docile. The breed finishes well with a great meat to fat ratio, which gives a quality meat that is hard to beat.

The challenges that Liz and Steve face in producing British Lop:
The main problem Liz and Steve face  is the cost of feeding their free range pigs. Convincing consumers to spend the extra money on high quality meat remains a challenge to producers who refuse to cut corners when it comes to the way in which they are rearing their animals.

Products that Liz and Steve are offering:
Liz and Steve offer a variety of products using British Lop, ranging from sausages to joints, all available in their shop or for local delivery. They also keep several other rare breed animals such as Traditional Hereford Cattle, Oxford Down sheep and various rare chicken breeds.

Liz and Steve’s favourite British Lop pig recipe:
Liz and Steve keep it simple and let the quality of meat speak for itself. Their 24 hour slow roast pork shoulder is the favourite recipe in their home.
